Stearic acid, legal number INS (international numbersystem) 570, EECNo.570, CAS [57-11-4], is Chemicalbook white or light yellowish white solid, soluble in alcohol , soluble in ether, benzene, carbon disulfide, amyl acetate and melting point 69.6 °C, is one of the main components of grease.
Stearic acid is one of the main long-chain fatty acids that make up fats, and is present in the form of glycerides in animal fats, oils and some vegetable oils, which are hydrolyzed to obtain stearic acid. Stearic acid is a fatty acid widely present in nature, with the chemical properties of general carboxylic acid, almost all oils have different content of stearic acid, in animal fat content is higher, such as butter content up to 24%, vegetable oil content less, tea oil is 0.8%, palm oil is 6%, but the content in cocoa butter is as high as 34%.

Stearic acid is widely used in cosmetics, plastic plasticizers, mold release agents, stabilizers, surfactants, rubber vulcanization accelerators, waterproofing agents, polishing agents, metal soaps, metal mineral flotation agents, softeners, pharmaceuticals and other organic chemicals. Stearic acid can also be used as a solvent for oil-soluble pigments, a crayon slippering agent, a wax paper polishing agent, an emulsifier for glyceryl stearate, etc. Stearic acid is also widely used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride plastic pipes, plates, profiles, films, is a heat stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride, with good lubricity and good light and heat stability. Used in PVC pipes, stearic acid helps prevent "coking" during processing, is an effective heat stabilizer in PVC film processing, and can prevent discoloration of the finished film caused by exposure to sunlight. Stearic acid has become a functional chemicalbook additive for lubricating, plasticizing and stabilizing filled modified masterbatches. Stearic acid can effectively improve the inorganic powder coating activation effect, increase the fluidity of the material, for the inorganic powder accounted for the absolute number of materials when the melt flow rate is large, appropriately increase the content of stearic acid, can significantly increase the melt flow rate of the material. However, the amount of stearic acid used in filling modified masterbatch also has a limit value, which is generally controlled at about 1% of the total mass. If the amount of addition is too large, it will cause the quality performance of plastic products to decline, and it will also cause sticky substances in mechanical devices such as the position of the die lip of plastic product production equipment, affecting production efficiency and product quality. Monohydrated or polyol esters of stearate can be used as cosmetics, non-ionic surfactants, plasticizers, etc. Its alkali metal salt is soluble in water and is one of the main components of soap, and other metal salts can be used as waterproofing agents, lubricants, bactericides, coating additives and polyvinyl chloride stabilizers.
