Stretch film is a highly stretchable plastic film wrapped around an item. Elastic resilience binds objects together. In contrast, shrink wrapping paper is loosely coated around the item and tightly contracted by heat. It is commonly used to combine pallet goods, but can also be used to bundle smaller items. The types of stretch film include binding stretch film, hand stretch film, extension core stretch film, machine stretch film and electrostatic dissipation film.Many films have about 500% elongation at break, but can only stretch to 100-300% in use. After stretching, elastic recovery will be used to keep the load tight.

In pallet unification, stretch packaging can have the following functions:
Improve the stability of the product or packaging to form a unit load
Handle and store unit loads more efficiently
Some degree of dust and moisture protection
A certain degree of tamper-proof and anti-theft packaging
A certain amount of sun protection (UV elastic film)
Extend the shelf life of certain foods
